Analysis of Polarized Light with NICMOS

چکیده
The Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST ) contains optics in Cameras 1 and 2 (NIC1 and NIC2) that enable imaging polarimetry at D1 and 2 km, respectively, with unprecedented spatial detail. PreÑight thermal vacuum tests revealed that the three polarizers in each camera have unique polarizing efficiencies and that the rotational orientations within each set depart from the nominal 120¡ intervals. To properly interpret polarimetric data obtained with these optical systems, a reduction algorithm was developed which di†ers from the standard approach used for ideal polarizers. We discuss this technique, its successful application to selected NICMOS observations, and the uncertainty distributions associated with threeand four-polarizer schemes. We also present information on the NICMOS instrumental polarization, the nature and origin of image artifacts in the polarized images, and suggest observational techniques for obtaining high-quality polarimetry with the instrument. With the large number of observations already taken and the exciting prospects for an extended mission with a retroÐt closed-cycle turbine cooler, NICMOS will continue to produce high-resolution imaging polarimetry in the near-infrared for many years to come.

Polarimetry with NICMOS
NICMOS cameras 1 and 2 (with ∼ 43 and ∼ 76 mas/pixel, respectively) each carry a set of three polarizing elements to provide high sensitivity observations of linearly polarized light. The polarizers are bandpass limited and provide diffraction-limited imaging in camera 1 at 0.8 1.3μm, and in camera 2 at 1.9-2.1μm. The NICMOS design specified the intra-camera primary axis angles of the polarizer...
متن کاملThe Polarimetric Capabilities of NICMOS
The polarimetric capabilities of NICMOS are demonstrated from data obtained during the Early Release Observations of IRC +10216 and CRL 2688 (the Egg Nebula). Preflight Thermal Vacuum tests revealed that each polarizer has a unique polarizing efficiency, and that the position angle offsets differ from the nominal positions of 0◦, 120◦ & 240◦. Therefore an algorithm different from that of an ide...
متن کاملHubble Space Telescope NICMOS Polarization Measurements of OMC-1
We present 2 μm polarization measurements of positions in the BN region of the Orion Molecular Cloud (OMC-1) made with NICMOS Camera 2 (0.2 resolution) on Hubble Space Telescope. Our goals are to seek the sources of heating for IRc2, 3, 4, and 7, identify possible young stellar objects (YSOs), and characterize the grain alignment in the dust clouds along the lines-of-sight to the stars. Our res...
متن کاملNumerical Investigation of Birefringene Effect on the Light Reflection
In the present paper, the problem of light reflection from a birefringent medium and thin film is considered. First, the analytical equations governing the propagation of a plane and harmonic electromagnetic wave in an infinite, birefringent, linear, non-dispersive, non-absorbing, and non-magnetic medium is derived from Maxwell equations. Then, using phase matching condition and boundary condit...
متن کاملSimulation of Surface Plasmon Excitation in a Plasmonic Nano-Wire Using Surface Integral Equations
In this paper, scattering of a plane and monochromatic electromagnetic wave from a nano-wire is simulated using surface integral equations. First, integral equationsgoverning unknown fields on the surface is obtained based on Stratton-Cho surface integral equations. Then, the interaction of the wave with a non-plasmonic as well as a palsmonic nano-wire is considered. It is shown that in scatter...
